40 Days of Dating like a game of truth or dare (without the latter), elevating 40 Days from mere blog to, as Goodman puts it, “web reality”.
The success has garnered a movie deal and a beautifully executed book. Walsh talked to us about the ideas, the designs and the aftermath of one of the most talked about projects in recent years. After 40 days went viral, we were approached by numerous editors and publishers who wanted us to write a book. We went sure if it made sense to make the blog into a book format unless there was significant new content. After everything, the number one question we received from fans was: What happened after Day 40?
This was a real labor of love for us. One of the most rewarding and surprising aspects of the result of releasing the blog was that we connected to people and started a dialogue about love and relatinoships Ultimately, we knew that our stories and issues were not unlike a lot of people’s issues. As creative people, we love the process of making something provocative that could potentially inspire and touch people. Naturally, as designers and art directors, it was important to us that 40 Days have an identity, however, it wasn’t until the project was over that we designed the site, shot the videos, photographed our items, asked for lettering contributions, etc.
As designers, our first instinct was to create an elaborate oversized beautiful coffee table book with fancy printing techniques, tip ins, gilded edges, all the bells and whistles. However we quickly realized that would become an expensive and unaccessible book. The success of our project was in part due to the format and easy access and we wanted to translate that into book form. We collaborated with over 80 designers and illustrators who created typographic pieces for the book for the chapter openings.

Today marks the last day of the “40 Days of Dating” experiment, a forced courtship blog run by two successful, telegenic graphic designer friends who decided to very publicly try dating each other. Eh, I feel bad calling Jessica insufferable; she’s just not my type of gal. She enjoys running around the city pretending to be Amelie and comes up with analogies like, “Our relationship with Disney World, like each other, was deeply conflicted and complicated.
We are so wrong for each other in so many ways, and so right for each other in many other ways. But Tim! Tim is such a dick to her. He writes endlessly about how neurotic and complicated Jessica is without realizing that he’s the hopelessly messed-up one. For example, on Day 34 — that’s like a year of intimacy in real dating time — Jessica mentions to him that a girl he briefly dated might be at a party they’re attending.
Tim irrationally freaks out and goes into this rant about how Jessica is a devious manic pixie “tricky girl”:. The tricky girl will unknowingly rip your heart out, cut it into little pieces, and then ask you, politely, if she can feed you. Everything that happened tonight was a classic tricky girl situation. Someone else might date Jessie and not see ANY of this.

Many of the places were the scenes of some of the dates they described in their online experiment. The 40 Days of Dating website and book continue to be a wonderful example of how design can truly make every aspect of life richer…though the pair ultimately decided they were better off as friends. Whatever opinion there may be about online dating, most can agree that traditional forms of courtship seem miles away. As the name suggests, it chronicled their experiences of each day they were dating. The entire idea sprung from their opposite relationship problems. Jessica is a hopeless romantic, while Tim is a commitment-phobe. Both seeking to find love — or at least sort out their issues — they decided to exclusively date for 40 days. Thus, it was no surprise that the website had stunning art direction.
The designers have added a lot of extra content that reveal more about their past and what happened after the experiment. Their story was funny and always brutally honest. It attracted a lot of readership, and less than two years after its initial launch, the designers are now authors. Abrams Publishing released a printed version of the book on January 20, Warner Brothers have also optioned the rights for a film version. The book itself is everything and more a reader can ask for. The art direction, hand lettering and illustrations are by Goodman and Walsh.

The idea was for the two longtime friends to help each other with their respective relationship problems—Walsh a hopeless romantic, Goodman a commitmentphobe—by dating for the supposed time it takes to break a habit. Despite a polarizing response—some found it romantic , others called it a hoax —the site went viral, garnering a remarkable , unique visitors a day. In addition to a cult following, the pair got a movie deal from Warner Bros and turned the blog into a book, published last year.
Like 40 Days Of Dating, which ended in Walsh and Goodman deciding to just be friends, the experiment started out with a resolution for self-improvement. Based on programs like Alcoholics Anonymous that are designed to change behaviors, the pair formulated their own step program, which required them to tackle a new challenge each month. Walsh and Goodman created the steps by finding common axioms and taking them very literally.
At one point during the process, Goodman faces his fears of going bald by shaving off his hair. As the months go on the resolutions get more and more personal, with Goodman embarking on a search for his biological dad and Walsh confronting a past with mental health problems. That sense of build-up is indicative of what Walsh and Goodman do best together: storytelling that seamlessly works in elements both online and off.
The story will unfold in 12 installments, feeding readers morsels of a larger story not unlike a TV series would.
